You might be worried about what they might find, but lack of communication and direction is one of the biggest causes of unhappiness, frustration and staff turnover. It’s easily avoided with a framework that shows your team exactly what you need and how they can deliver it day-in, day-out.
I use a bunch of tools for my clients that include documenting the core processes. It works wonders for a business if you follow these steps when creating them:
1. Get input from the team. The people doing the work should help devise the best way to deliver the desired result.
2. Determine the outcome and work backwards to identify each of the high-level steps necessary to drive that outcome.
3. Keep things simple. There are a handful of core processes that drive every business, so don’t get carried away.
4. Establish metrics. Review each step so that activities can be measured and inform you that the overall process is working.
Lastly, make sure everyone follows the core processes. Otherwise, they’re not worth the paper they’re written on.
Do you have your business processes documented, or are they in your head? Let me know in the comments.
