Welcome to Thinking season!

I recently caught up with a colleague who I hadn’t seen for a couple of months and he made a comment about this time of year that got me thinking. He said that between the horse race and the bbq not much gets done. In other words, between Melbourne Cup & Australia Day things quieten down in the world of Australian business.

For anyone who has tried to fit in all of the end-of-year events knows, there is a lot of activity but not necessarily a lot of productive work or decisions being made. In the midst of the celebrations and opportunities to thank clients and business partners for the year that was, there is also an opportunity to take some time to reflect on the year and begin planning next year.

This requires you to step out of the day to day and spend some time looking at your business from the outside, clear of the noise & detail that fills your head & day when working in the business.

Take time to reflect on how they are working as a team and address some of the big issues that have been hanging around the business by doing a complete review of their plan, confirming their vision and agreeing to the priorities for bringing that to life over the next 12 months.

In the world of EOS, this entails business owners and their leadership teams spending 2 days doing a complete review of their plan, confirming their vision and agreeing to the priorities for bringing that to life over the next 12 months. They also take the opportunity to reflect on how they are working as a team and address some of the big issues that have been hanging around the business.

Today marks the beginning of this time.

It may be tempting to push these types of conversations out to the new year, dare I say even February when everyone is back on board post-school holidays. There is, however, a curveball with Easter coming early at the end of March next year. So before you know it, you’ll be 4 months into the year with no clarity on where you are going or how you are going to get there. That is an extraordinary amount of time to waste, don’t you agree?

What is your leadership doing to ensure next year is going to be better, more effective, disciplined & more accountable than this year? Are you setting aside the time over the next 6 weeks to do the quality thinking & planning that your business deserves?
