I was chatting to a business owner recently who thought doing an annual planning meeting away from the office was a waste of time and money. He wanted to run the full-day workshops in the company’s large boardroom. “Everything we need is already here,” he said.
And that’s precisely the problem.
When you’re charting a course for the business over the next 12 months, the last thing you need is easy access to the day-to-day business niggles. You’re supposed to be thinking big picture, not nipping out for five minutes to sort out an issue.
It’s crucial to get as far away from the office as possible and switch off all devices, so the focus is entirely on growing the business. I also encourage clients to book a nice venue, so the event feels special and memorable (like the Long Reef Golf Club here), and the results speak for themselves.
Do you have any tips for switching from working ‘in’ the business to ‘on’ the business? I’d love to hear them below.
Also, if you’re planning to grow your business in 2021 and would like a few pointers, send me a message, and I’ll happily send you a complimentary copy of my book, Scaling Your Business in Unpredictable Times.
