Maybe you’re like Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) in A Few Good Men. The Navy lawyer grabs his baseball bat and says “I think better with my bat” when he’s plotting to nail Colonel Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson).
Because of clients like Kaffee, I put things like fidget spinners and Rubik’s Cubes on the table during our quarterly planning days. Some people within a leadership team get more clarity around the business’s direction when their hands are otherwise occupied. Plus, with no mobile phones allowed, the desktop toys are more of a tool to focus rather than a distraction.
It works a treat, but having run planning sessions for businesses for many years now, I’m slightly disappointed by two things.
1. Nobody has ever finished a Rubik’s Cube.
2. No client has yelled, “You can’t handle the truth!” at their colleague (although a couple have come close).
What do you do to focus the mind? Let me know in the comments.
If reading a good book helps you focus, please send me a message, and I’ll happily send you a copy of my book, Scaling Your Business in Unpredictable Times.
